Mark of the Beast? – Initial thoughts on the Traumatic Reality of Public Law 108-458

I haven't had nearly the time my inclinations would like to dig into the depths of the recent Intelligence Bill signed by GWB. Indeed, neither, or so it would seem, did anyone in Congress, or, need I say, the White House. So, I will content myself with a few observations on what little discussion surrounds it.

Most criticism of the bill seems to come from the Right, and their distrust of increased federal government oversight of States. Given this distrust, most opposition has come from those arguing that federal regulation of driver's license standards amounts to the imposition of a National ID, something particularly anathema to the far Right. Suspicion has further led to speculation that internal travel checkpoints will be next, preceded only briefly by the issuance of a true national ID, perhaps under the pretext of picking up the slack from those "red" states that will undoubtedly prove out of compliance after the 18 month time frame has passed to make state-issued DL's adhere to new biometric and other standards required under the bill.

Making the conversation even worse is, characteristically, the Left, who, in there nearly blinded tunnel vision, has decided that making fun of every stance made by anyone on the Right, even those made by potential allies against the gross civil rights abuses being perpetrated by the current administration, is their best of all possible strategies. Typical left-leaning commentary, busy mocking right-leaning paranoia that the "number of the beast" is being encoded into DLs, has done little to advance the paltry debate over the necessity of biometrics for the tracking of ordinary American citizens. Incidentally, most of the Left currently seems more interested in comedy, entertainment and self-help that actual discourse, which places it closer to the Right than they would ever care to admit. But that is for another post.

The traditional response from the Left, and to an even greater degree, the Center, to this perceived paranoia of the far Right has been "If I have nothing to hide, I have nothing to worry about." Of particular interest here is the new, pre-election characterization of the left itself as being paranoid as regards the imminent disasters sure to follow the reelection of GWB. Thus, while the right's mantra may be summed up as "just because your paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you," the left's seems to be "paranoia is something Red Staters get, I'm busy coping with a Traumatic Reality." Well, you had better get use to it. Some of us spent the 90's coping. But then, some of us have been paying attention all along, not simply since the invasion of Iraq.

But to get back to the Intelligence Bill. It is tough to say for sure what the long and short term effects of PL 108-458 will be. Congress, a year from now and faced with an election, will surely voice some form of feeble and belated opposition to the imposition of federal authority on our States. In particular, I can foresee energetic lip-service coming from certain far-left leaning Representatives of my state of Oregon, who unfortunately though expectedly, all voted in favor of the Bill when it was in the House. Opposition, of course, may be contingent on the rather grandiose assumption that at least some of them will have actually read it by that time.

In conclusion, while the PATRIOT ACT has a sunset provision, albeit soon to no doubt be rendered immaterial by the re-selection of GWB and a Republican controlled Congress, Public Law 108-458 has no such opportunity for second guesses on the old, and seemingly anachronistic, freedom versus security debate. One can only hope that the fabled "inefficiency of government" will continue well into the enforcement of P.L. 108-458, the new Number of the Beast.
